The Mark of a Criminal Record | Devah Pager

As I slowly make my way through another delight entry, New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander, I am humbled by the great barriers facing people with a criminal record. The restrictions placed, boldly stated and discreetly stigmatized, require immense hurdles in order to achieve basic functions in American society.

The study

I focus on the effect of a criminal record on employment opportunities. This emphasis directs our attention to the stigma associated with criminal justice intervention and to the ways in which employers respond to this stigma in considering applicants
